STTA Policies

STTA Equity Statement

The STTA is committed to the principals of sports equity in all business that it conducts.

No individual shall be excluded from membership of the STTA or de-barred from being an Official on the Management Committee on the grounds of race, colour, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability or political affiliation.

Table tennis an inherently inclusive sport and the STTA is committed to actively promoting the participation and enjoyment of it to all sections of the community.

All voluntary and paid positions that the STTA recruits for will be openly recruited and procedures will be scrutinized to ensure equal opportunity at all stages of the process.

This statement will be subject to review and updating at the STTA's AGM each year.

The Sussex Table Tennis Alliance is a community sports group run by a voluntary committee with the primary aim of developing table tennis

This document has been discussed and adopted at the Alliance's 2008 set-up meeting in order to promote good practice within it for the safety and security of children, coaches, officials and volunteers.

Principles that Underpin STTA's Policy Statement:
  • The child's welfare is paramount
  • Bullying will not be tolerated on any level
  • All children whatever their age, culture, disability, gender, racial origin religious belief and/or sexual identity have the right to protection from abuse
  • Coaches, officials and volunteers are not trained to decide whether abuse has occurred but they have a responsibility to act upon any concerns or allegations
  • All STTA members, volunteers and coaches have a duty towards child protection
STTA's Responsibilities to Children and Young People

The STTA recognises its responsibilities and will ensure that:
  • Children are to be delivered to the venue by a responsible adult
  • Once at the venue no child will be allowed out of the hall unsupervised
  • The child shall not be released to an adult unknown to the supervisors
  • All confidential child protection records to be kept in the locked cabinet and storeroom
  • All coaches and volunteers have read and retain a copy of the Child Safeguarding Policy
  • In the event of a child needing to be taken home they will be accompanied by two STTA officials or volunteers
  • All activities that take place will be appropriately planned for children and young people
  • The Child Safeguarding Policy statement will be available for anyone to read and will be posted on the STTA's website www.sussextta.co.uk
  • The English Table Tennis Association's Child Protection Policy and 'Guidelines for Competition and Training' are understood and adopted as good practice.

THE STTA's nominated Child Safeguarding Officer will ensure satisfactory proof of photo identification, a full CRB disclosure and references are provided when recruiting new adults with access to children and young people through the STTA's activities.

Existing STTA coaches, officials and volunteers will receive the appropriate levels of training, disclosure checking (CRB) and knowledge of appropriate conduct/relationships with children and young people.

The STTA will review its Child Safeguarding Policy at its AGM.

Appendix A - Guidelines for Dealing with Abuse or Suspicion of Abuse

Do's

Do always treat allegations seriously and act towards the child as if you believe what they are saying.

Do tell the child that they were right to tell you.

Do reassure them that they are not to blame.

Do be honest and tell them what you have to do and why.

Do tell the child what you are doing and when, then keep them up to date with what is happening.

Do take further action as you may be the only person in a position to prevent future abuse. Always tell the nominated person immediately.

Do write down everything that is said and what action has been taken.

Do seek medical attention if necessary.

Do inform parents or carer immediately unless there is suspicion of their involvement.


Don'ts

Don't make promises that you cannot keep.

Don't interrogate the child this is the job of trained professional persons.

Don't cast doubt on what the child has told you don't interrupt or change the subject.

Don't say anything that may make the child feel responsible for the abuse.

Don't do nothing make sure that you inform the club child protection officer

Appendix C - Code of Conduct for STTA Volunteers, Coaches and Officials

The STTA aims to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct and practice in table tennis and expects the same of officials and volunteers acting on its behalf.
All officials and volunteers should:
  • Consider the well being and safety of everyone on the premises at all times
  • Treat everyone and expect to be treated by everyone with mutual trust and respect
  • Ensure all activities are appropriate to the age, ability and experience of players
  • Promote fair play
  • Uphold high standards of behaviour and appearance
  • Abide by all the club's rules, policies and codes of conduct and follow STTA guidelines
  • Never exert undue influence over others to obtain personal benefit or reward
  • Never condone rule violations nor the use of prohibited substances
  • Treat everyone equally regardless of age, gender, ethnic origin, religion, political persuasion, sexual orientation or disability
  • Encourage all STTA members to use their skills and talents whether as players, officials or volunteers to contribute to the success of the club
  • Attend appropriate volunteer training courses provided by the ETTA and other recognised agencies, e.g. Sport England, sports coach UK or local authority if required to do so
  • Complete a full CRB disclosure form and return it to the STTA Safeguarding Officer when working with children and young people
  • Avoid inappropriate conduct and relationships with children and young people at all times: specific unacceptable examples
    • Avoid inappropriate physical contact with children
    • Do not place yourself in a one-to-one situation with a child
    • Any sexual conduct
    • Lending or borrowing of money or property
    • Giving or receiving of gifts
    • Exclusive or secretive relationships
    • Inviting junior members into your home
