Player Code of Conduct
Sussex Community Circuit
The Sussex Circuit aims to provide a positive, fair and safe environment for all participants to enjoy the game and responsibility lies with all players to behave in a manner that promotes fair play, discipline and sportsmanship.
All players must...
- Play by the laws and rules of Table Tennis (allowances will be made for those players in lower bands)
- Accept the Umpire's decision. Any disputes should be taken to the band supervisor who will adjudicate. The final decision rests with the Circuit organisers.
- Obey any request made by a Circuit official to refrain from behaviour deemed unacceptable.
- Respect others - use of offensive language is not acceptable and no verbal abuse, aggressive or intimidatory behaviour will be tolerated.
- Play to enjoy the game - persistent demonstration of a lack of effort, bad sportsmanship or cheating will result in sanctions.
- Respect the equipment. The equipment is lent by local leagues and clubs to encourage participation in the sport. Abuse of this equipment will result in immediate sanctions. Proven theft or wilful damage will result in a permanent ban.
- Respect the premises. Please ensure that all rubbish including food wrappers, sweet papers, drink bottles etc is cleared up before leaving.
- Excitable, slightly loud or 'quirky' behaviour (eg self-talk) is allowable within reasonable limits and as long as it does not occur when a point is in progress. Gestures/comments should not be anything other than self-directed. Behaviour that is clearly motivated towards gaining advantage (gamesmanship) or showing-off will be liable to censure.
- Players are encouraged to demonstrate table tennis etiquette where appropriate (eg nets and edges that lead to a winning advantage on points). The best way to do this is just to raise a hand in acknowledgement of the piece of good fortune that you have just benefitted from.
- Players should always shake hands at the end of a game.
Sanction Levels
(administered by Tournament Organiser)
- FORMAL WARNING (holds for the duration of the current and next event)
- IMMEDIATE FORFEIT OF MATCH BEING PLAYED OR NEXT MATCH DUE TO PLAY (full points given to opponent automatically)
- IMMEDIATE DISQUALIFICATION FROM EVENT (no Circuit accumulator points given, no refund, plus banned from entering next Circuit event)
- PERMANENT BAN
The lists above are only guides to action. The Tournament Organiser in charge has ultimate discretion for dealing with a matter of discipline and may choose to act outside of the above sanctions approach if s/he feels it is necessary for any particular circumstance.
This Code of Conduct will be subject to regular review and updating as necessary.
Spectator Code of Conduct
Applicable to: Parents/Guardians/Carers, Other Relatives, Friends, Club/Teammates, Teachers and Coaches*
*'Coaches' being those not involved in an official capacity in running the event
The Sussex Community Circuit is a development focussed process run by volunteers concerned to support the following aims:
- Give young players an appropriate first-step opportunity to enjoy table tennis competition outside of school and/or club settings with other players of a similar ability level in a format where they are guaranteed plenty of games
- Encourage players to aspire to improve through the ability-banded structure of the events
- Encourage more adults to enjoy and get into table tennis whether in a playing or administrative role
- Promote fair play, discipline and sportsmanship
In this context the Sussex Community Circuit organisers wholeheartedly welcome the attendance and involvement of spectators of all types at Circuit events. Spectators add vibrancy, atmosphere and increase most players' motivation to impress.
Spectators are requested to take into account and abide by the spirit of the following points to help ensure events run smoothly:
- Avoid encroaching into the playing area unless specifically requested to do so by one of the Circuit officials
- Understand that the Circuit, operating within certain constraints (eg quality/quantity of equipment available) and organised by volunteers, is not a perfect process. Mistakes also happen from time to time. If problems occur the organisers will do their best to put things right and we would ask that supporters do their best to reinforce the solutions that are suggested.
- Involvement of spectators as umpires is welcomed but we would request that their contribution is restricted to matches not involving players they are related or linked to, for the obvious reason that to do so is to invite perceptions of bias particularly if a dispute occurs.
- Vocal support of players is fine within reasonable limits and indeed adds to the atmosphere but please bear in mind potential sensitivities of one-sided or what might be perceived as 'aggressive' support particularly where very young children (ie under 12's) are involved as opponents. If an official requests for vocal support to be 'toned down' please respect such a request.
- Do not use bad language in the Circuit venue or demonstrate behaviour that sets a bad example, particularly to the children involved in an event.
- Observe the laws of table tennis, support the Circuit ethos of fair play and respect the decisions of umpires and other officials.
- Do not bring undue influence to bear on umpires, officials or opponents, particularly where children are involved
- Please put litter in the bin and encourage players to do likewise.
- Applaud good play of both your player(s) and that of the opponent(s)
- Recognise the importance of performance, not just results, within the Circuit process. A player can play well and still lose; a player can play badly and lose but still have learned something. Striving for victory is a good quality to demonstrate but the Circuit is not about win-at-all-costs.
If you as a spectator have a comment, complaint or suggestion speak to the Lead Organiser on the day who will be pleased to receive it in the first instance
