K2 Looks Forward to Girls Comp
K2 Crawley, operated by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Crawley Borough Council, is delighted to be hosting the Heritage Oil and Tees Sport Sussex Series Two Star Junior Girls table tennis tournament on Saturday, January 14. This competition promises to be fast-paced and exciting with the strongest EVER field of 12 nationally and internationally acclaimed young players lined up to face each other.
This strong field has been attracted partly by the biggest ever prize money for an under-18 girls event with Heritage Oil providing £500 to the winner, £300 to the runner up and £100 to the third placed player. In addition, the unprecedented strength of players – many with UK or international titles to their name – will give each an intense and spirited tournament.
Many of the 12 are ranked in the England or Wales Top 10 and several are from Sussex including: Yolanda King, under-18 England Champion, ranked 10 in England Women’s and 2 in England Juniors; Yuki Wat, a former Hong Kong under-15 international who has recently moved to Sussex; Lois Peake, currently ranked 3 in England cadets and 18 in England Juniors and Emma Torkington who has represented Sussex for many years and is ranked 12 in England Juniors.
Spectators can view the tournament for free and it’s hoped that many table tennis fans and budding players will come to watch the proceedings. All the girls will play eight matches through the day with play starting at 09:00 and prize giving around 17:00.
In addition, Sussex County Table Tennis Association is running other open tournaments on the day for boys and girls under 18. Unlike traditional ‘knock out’ competitions, all players can expect 11 games in ability-banded groups so they can learn from competing against a number of opponents.
“We are delighted to be hosting this event with such high-ranked and promising players,” says Chris Lovelock, centre manager for K2 Crawley. “It’s an honour to have such a strong field of players here and we hope many of our members can come along and support the girls, watch the other competitions that are running and perhaps pick up some playing tips too,” he says.
“K2 Crawley is an excellent venue for this event and its facilities are of the highest standard for table tennis players,” says Steve Pound, calendar and tournament secretary at the Sussex County Table Tennis Association. “Table tennis is a terrific sport for all ages and I would encourage both players and anyone interested in playing to come and see this tournament as they will enjoy a high standard of table tennis up close.”
